Dissecting First Essay

  • I would need to introduce who the quote came from because I did not thus the reader does not understand which author it came from.
  • Changing the curriculum would be informative and pointless because they can not cover certain topics in fear of students filing cases, and or losing their job. Teaching is to be free, no limitations or restrictions, what was taught was in a safe place compared to now its like teaching in the mine field the trigger warning movement have “a chilling effect on their [teachers] teaching and pedagogy”. Dweck’s solution is for children to learn a growth mindset to become more open minded adults while Lukianioff and Haidt question that if they allow students to “develop extra thin skin” they are never equipped for the harsh workforce.
    • I forgot to say who said it. I would change it to, teaching is to be free, no limitations or restrictions, classes are to be a safe place. Now it’s like teaching in a minefield fearful of creating a trigger warning for someone. In Lukianoff and Haidt they call it “a chilling effect on their [teachers] teaching and pedagogy [the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject and theoretical subject].
  • This quote from L and H I did not quote to specify that it was their quote and not my own.I would change this sentence/quote.
  • This is a big issue because by magnifying your problems instead of questioning them yourself you are hurting others by pushing your feelings onto them, making them feel what you feel. A great saying from Buddhism (Stoicism, Hinduism, and many other traditions) is “You can never achieve happiness by making the world conform to your desires. But you can master your desires and habits of thought”.
    • I would introduce that L and H talked about buddhism… and then convey my idea of how I connect it to my argument and idea of Dweck and Land H. I would change it to something like, L and H talk about Buddhism’s (Stoicism, Hinduism, and many other traditions) saying that “You can never achieve happiness by making the world conform to your desires. But you can master your desires and habits of thought” then give my interpretation that people should not try and control other emotional feelings and instead focus on controlling their own emotions.
  • I use words that L and H use to describe the reasoning for some peoples reaction.
  • Dweck’s solution is for children to learn a growth mindset to become more open minded adults while Lukianioff and Haidt question that if they allow students to “develop extra thin skin” they are never equipped for the harsh workforce. Catastrophizing takes normal emotions and magnifies them, just like the movement does. The movement takes normal uncomfortable feelings and magnifies for others to see the person’s discomfort.
    • Catastrophizing takes normal emotions and magnifies them, just like the movement does. This sentence I need to quote L and H because it’s their word then give my explanation of my point of view. I would most likely change it to L and H use the word catastrophizing which means taking a normal emotion and magnifies them, just like the movement. People catastrophize traumatic information thinking they are protecting their peers but in actuality are hurting them because they are not letting others experience them in a safe environment.
