Relating Dweck and Lukianoff
- Dweck and Lukianoff both have ideas about the human mind and why we behave as such. In Dweck’s ted talk she talks about how there are two kinds of people in the world, growth and fixed mindset. Growth mindset people are open minded, ready for a challenge, and are not afraid to deal with stressful and struggling issues. While fixed mindset people have a mindset that why take on a challenge, why not stick to what I know. They do not want to deal with the struggle of solving the problem. Lukianoff’s idea is that students in college nowadays are sheltered from any uncomfortable or disturbing words, thoughts, and/or ideas. Colleges are being run by students who have the right mindset by protecting other students from mean and hurtful words but now are coddling them. Not preparing them for the real world where people can say whatever they want. Both talk about how students think and deal with hurtful and uncomfortable words.

- Both Dweck and Lukianoff/ Haidt talk about how people take action against issues in their face. In Dweck’s Ted Talk “The Power of Yet”, she talks about two kinds of people’s mindset, fixed and growth mindset. Growth mindset are ones who take on the struggle head on instead of not wanting to deal with the issue. Fixed mindset are people who do not want to deal with the struggle of solving an issue or are contemptuous of themselves and their knowledge. She states that fixed people care about grades and how they did against their peers, while growth people care about learning the information and being able to solve challenging issues. In Dweck’s experiment on 10 year olds she found that some said “I love a challenge” or “You know, I was hoping this would be more informative”, them bring the growth mindset people. While, others failed because Dweck believes that the kids saw their intelligence being judged causing them not wanting to try the challenge. In Lukianoff/ Haidt “The coddling of the American Mind” they start by stating American Colleges are being run by the students “to scrub campuses clean of words, ideas, and subjects that might cause discomfort or give offense”. Colleges are being vindictive protective to almost full adults, shielding them from the real world where people are allowed to speak their mind freely. They talk about how microaggressions and trigger warnings can be in everyday conversations thus people must watch what they say everyday in fear that they will be persecuted and judged for saying it. Dweck and Lukianoff/ Haidt both talk about how people became themselves. In Dweck she talks about how some students focus on learning while others focus on grades because they determine if you are smart or not. Lukianoff/ Haidt talk about how kids in the past would be left to entertain themselves by playing in the streets, today kids now play inside on technology. Fixed and growth mindset are the focus of Dweck’s ted talk but it relates to Lukianoff/ Haidt’s topic about politics a “survey data going back to the 1970’s show that on average, their mutual dislike used to be surprisingly mild. Negative feelings have grown steadily stronger, however, particular since the early 2000’s”.
- Growth mindset people from the experiment said ““I love a challenge” or “you know, I was hoping this would be informative” They understand that their abilities could be developed”, growth mindset showed they were ready for the challenge and took it on. While fixed mindset people were seen as “students felt tragic, catastrophic” they thought they were being judged for their intellect. Growth mindset is spread through “The Coddling”. When they talk about socratic thinking, learning it has students encouraging them to question their own beliefs along with wisdoms from others around them. Fixed mindset is shown when they talk about the college students being shielded from uncomfortable thoughts, ideas, and words making. This shows that others do not want to face the issues and struggle from others. However, when they face the real world they will not be prepared to face the harsh criticism.
